Turkish officials first report Khashoggi is missing

Saudis discussed plan to lure Jamal Khashoggi to Saudi Arabia, US intercepts show
(CNN)The
US has intercepts of Saudi officials discussing a plan to lure
journalist Jamal Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia and detain him,
according to a US official familiar with the intelligence.
Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist and critic of the regime, has been missing for more than week after
going to the Saudi consulate general in Istanbul to obtain wedding
papers. Turkish officials privately believe he was killed at the
consulate, an allegation denied by Saudi Arabia.
The
official said it is unclear if the original plan was to murder
Khashoggi or if something went wrong at the consulate and that he might
have been killed during an attempt to kidnap him. The official said that
getting Khashoggi to the consulate appears to have been a backup plan,
because he couldn't be persuaded to fly back to Saudi Arabia.
The official said there is no hard evidence as to whether Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post, is dead or alive.
The source did not say when the US became aware of the discussions. As CNN reported earlier this week, intercepted communications were being reviewed in the wake of Khashoggi's disappearance.
The
official would not go so far as to say Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman ordered the operation but said that, although he may not have
known the specifics such a plan couldn't have taken place without his
approval.
US officials think it's
possible the Crown Prince wanted Khashoggi silenced, but miscalculated
the global impact his disappearance would have.
The Washington Post first reported the details of the intercepts.
US President Donald Trump is facing increased pressure over the Khashoggi case. Late Tuesday, a bipartisan group of senators wrote to the President, calling
for the White House to determine what happened to Khashoggi and whether
sanctions should be imposed on whoever was responsible for his fate.
The
letter, penned by the top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee, triggers an investigation under legislation that
allows the President to impose sanctions on individuals or countries
that are deemed to have committed a human rights violation. The White
House must respond within 120 days, setting out what actions it proposes
to take.
Trump
told Fox News in an interview on Wednesday night that "so far it's
looking a little bit like" the Saudis are behind Khashoggi's
disappearance but said it was too early to say how the US might respond.
Blocking further arms sales to Saudi Arabia "would be hurting us," he
said.
Trump said that US economic
success was due in part to "what we are doing with our defense systems,"
and added: "Frankly I think that would be a very, very tough pill to
swallow for our country."
Investigation continues
Turkish
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told reporters Thursday that Turkey
"cannot remain silent" on the disappearance of Khashoggi.
"We
are currently investigating the event in all its dimensions. The event
took place in our country. We cannot remain silent in the face of an
event like this because it is not a normal occurrence," Erdogan said
while returning on a flight from Hungary. He said security and
intelligence forces "have been looking at all dimensions of this" and
are looking especially closely at the country's entry and exit points.
Timeline of Khashoggi's disappearance
Turkish
officials have said that a 15-man team flew from Saudi Arabia into
Istanbul on the day Khashoggi entered the consulate, and were present in
the building at the same time the journalist. The investigation has
focused on CCTV footage which showed the men arriving at the consulate.
A
Saudi source familiar with four of the 15 men told CNN that one is a
former diplomat in London and an intelligence officer, and another is a
forensics expert.
In
a statement to CNN on Wednesday, a Saudi official said the kingdom
"categorically" denies "any involvement in Jamal's disappearance."
"At
this stage, our priority is to support the investigation, as opposed to
responding to evolving comments not directly related to those efforts.
Jamal's well being, as a Saudi citizen, is our utmost concern and we are
focusing on the investigation as a means to reveal the truth behind his
disappearance. Our sympathies go out to the family during this
difficult time," the official said.
2019 presidency: Atiku asks Buhari 14 questions
The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, has hit at President Muhammadu Buhari again raising 14 questions for the President and the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Atiku’s camp said the government and the ruling party had abandoned governance and taken up the full duty of hurling insults at the former Vice President.
In a statement by the spokesman of the Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi, on Wednesday, the former Vice President charged the government and the APC to name one project started and completed by Buhari, one youth in the cabinet or one terrorist arrested and convicted by the government, among other things.
“It has come to our attention that the Buhari government and the All Progressives Congress have been very idle of late, which explains their abandonment of the vital duties of running the government in order to focus on hurling insults and false accusations on the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, His Excellency, Atiku Abubakar,” he said.
The statement added, “In order to give Nigerians the answers they want, we urge the Buhari Campaign Organisation to take the #BuhariChallenge and answer the following questions.
“Name one project initiated, started and completed in the last three years by the Buhari administration.
“Name one youth in President Buhari’s cabinet.
“Name one campaign promise President Buhari has kept.
“Name one Southerner heading a National Intelligence Agency under Buhari.
“Name one terrorist arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by the Buhari administration.
“Name one Buhari government official arrested, tried, convicted and imprisoned by the Buhari administration over their many budget padding scandals.
“Name one member of the Buhari administration fingered in corruption that was fired, arrested and currently facing trial.
“Name one former President or Head of State that has not been blamed by President Buhari for the precarious state of the economy he led us into.
“Name one year that Nigeria’s GDP grew faster than her population under Buhari (for 16 years of PDP administrations, Nigeria’s GDP always grew faster than population growth).
“Name the initiatives the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria being named the world headquarters for extreme poverty under Buhari.
“Name one initiative the Buhari government has put in place to address Nigeria having the world’s highest number of out of school children (13.2 million according to the United Nations Children Fund).
“Name the date the Ogoni cleanup will begin. · Name what President Buhari has done with the ₦13 trillion loans he has taken in 3 years (compared to the ₦6 trillion borrowed by the PDP in 16 years).
“Name the real owners of the Ikoyi Apartment billions.
“These are the issues the Nigerian people want to hear about, not insults from a Presidency and a party that have spent three years in office only to preside over Nigeria’s first ever recession in 25 years.
“We urge the Buhari administration to remember that it is this disinterest in real governance and focus on trivia that caused Bill Gates to look President Buhari in the eye and tell him that ‘your economic blueprint does not address Nigerians’ needs’.
“The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organisation runs an issue based campaign where refined language and cerebral arguments founded on facts are used to disseminate the vision of our candidate which is why we call on the Buhari Campaign Organisation to waste no time in taking the #BuhariChallenge in clearing the air on these knotty issues bothering the minds of Nigerians.”

Politics Theresa May's government is on the brink of collapse as DUP threatens to pull the plug
The Democratic Unionist Party which props up Theresa May is threatening to pull the plug on their confidence and supply deal with the Conservatives.
The Northern Irish party is furious with reported plans for Northern Ireland to effectively stay in stay in the customs union and single market during the backstop period.
This would mean new checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of UK after Brexit — a clear breach of the DUP's red line of new divergence between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
The DUP has threatened to vote against the budget, which in times gone by would bring down a prime minister.

LONDON — Theresa May's fragile government is on threbrink of collapse after the Democratic Unionist Party, threatened to withdraw their support for the prime minister over her controversial Brexit plans.
The party's Brexit spokesman, Sammy Wilson, wrote on Thursday morning that the UK government is treating the pro-union DUP like a "soft touch who can be pushed around" over the thorny issue of the Irish border.
Wilson adds: "The road which the leaks and briefings is outlining is the road to parliamentary defeat for any deal the prime minister brings forward. She will not have DUP support, regardless of whether the government tries to bribe, bully or browbeat us into accepting it."
In the first sign of a crack in the government, the DUP abstained on a Labour amendment to the Agriculture Bil on Wednesday.
Now the Northern Irish party, which has nine MPs in the House of Commons, reportedly intends to vote against the UK government's upcoming autumn budget if it doesn't change course on the question of the Irish backstop.
Budget votes have historically been regarded as confidence votes in the prime minister. Although it wouldn't automatically trigger her downfall under the terms of the Fixed Term Parliaments Act, losing a budget vote would be a massive humiliation for May and lead to immediate calls for her to resign.
What's the problem?
The DUP is furious over the reported details of the backstop agreement being thrashed out by UK and EU negotiators in Brussels.
The backstop is the insurance policy for making sure the frictionless border between Northern Ireland and the Republic is maintained after Brexit. It will come into effect at the end of the proposed transition period, in January 2021, unless a new trading arrangement which protects the open Irish border is in place.
Under plans currently being negotiated, the UK will effectively remain in a customs union with the EU during the backstop period, while Northern Ireland alone will remain fully aligned with the European single market.
This plan is controversial as would it mean new checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK which breach the DUP's redline of no divergence whatsoever between the two.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Wednesday that although some checks can take place away from the border, those on live animals and animal-derived products would have to take place at the border. Not only that, but these checks would increase tenfold on what happens currently.
"There will be administrative procedures for goods travelling from the UK to Northern Ireland which do not exist today. I understand this is politically sensitive, but Brexit is not our [the EU’s] choice," Barnier said yesterday.
There is also the issue of trade. If the Northern Ireland effectively stays in the customs union and single market for a period of time after Brexit, it will be unable to participate in any new trade deals signed by the UK government.
DUP leader Foster was furious after meeting with EU figures on Wednesday. In a statement, she said: "We will not burden future generations with a deal which diminishes Northern Ireland’s position in the United Kingdom."
So what next?
The DUP's threat to vote against the budget is a sign that the confidence and supply deal agreed between them and the Conservatives following last year's general election could be about to collapse.
On Wednesday night, DUP MPs abstained on a piece of agricultural legislation on which they had been expected to back the government, in a message to Prime Minister May that they are not bluffing.
If the DUP does vote down the budget — which will be revealed by Chancellor Philip Hammond later this month — the chances of another early general election will crank up a few notches, as May's leadership would be in peril.
Government sources pushed back on Wednesday, telling journalists that this would be a breach of the confidence and supply deal, and that the DUP would have to give back the £1 billion it received as part of that arrangement.

And what about Brexit?
It's looking increasingly likely that if May is going to get a Brexit deal through Parliament, she will have to do so without the support of 9 DUP MPs. That would make an already difficult task even tougher.
The DUP was last night backed by leading Brexiteers Boris Johnson and Steve Baker. Former Brexit minister Baker tweeted "no one should underestimate their [DUP's resolve] while Johnson said the reported backstop plan would make the UK an "EU colony." The prime minister is becoming increasingly isolated.
And to make the prime minister's headache even more acute, around 30 Conservative party's pro-EU MPs are reportedly planning to form an official group counterbalance the Jacob Rees Mog-led ERG pro-Brexit group.
In summary, the many parliamentary factions which have for months threatened to derail both May's Brexit plan and her leadership have erupted into life — and MPs have only been back from recess for two days.
Figures in London and Brussels are increasingly confident that negotiators will be able to reach a final Brexit deal. Whether this deal will be accepted by a majority of MPs in Westminster is a different question altogether.
