The General Abdulsalami Abubakar led Peace Committee, Tuesday, met with the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, on the forthcoming 2019 general elections in Abuja.
The former Head of State was accompanied to the meeting by Matthew Kukah, Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese; former Vice-President Ebitu Ukiwe and Nicholas Okoh, Anglican bishop.
The meeting was aimed at discussing with the INEC chairman on ways and democratic processes to adopt, to make the forthcoming 2019 presidential election a successful one.
Abdulsalami also used the opportunity to call on politicians to shun violence and anything that would disrupt the forthcoming elections.
He said after the meeting: “We are all aware that we are approaching the 2019 election and already you are very much aware how the polity is being heated as a result of which we have decided to step our action in ensuring that there is peace in the country and the politicians play by the rule of the game and also the security agencies and the INEC play their role accordingly.
“This morning we have interacted with the INEC chairman and his staff and also the security agencies here who have got one role or the other to perform in this election.

“All in all, we have had a briefing and later this afternoon we are going to meet the political parties and the chairmen of the 91 registered political parties in furtherance of ensuring that peace continues. We are going to listen to them, hear their complaints and also appeal to them to make sure that politics is played without bitterness.
“As you are very much aware if there is no peace in any country there would be no country at all. So this is the essence of this meeting to ensure that we are all on the same wave length.”

Egypt: 19 Militias killed by police

The Chairman of the Imo State governorship primaries of the party which produced Senator Hope Uzodinma as the governorship candidate of the party, Ahmed Gulak, has revealed that he rejected to be flown on private jet and $2m as bribe to rig the primaries.
Gulak stated this when he addressed reporters in Abuja, adding that even though the offer was so tempting, he rejected it in order to do the right thing.
According to him, he had to persuade the parties that he was going to do the needful and conduct a free and fair primary.
He said he was happy because the party had vindicated him by insisted on the outcome of the primaries his panel held.
”Naturally, even before I went to Imo State, I was offered a private jet to take me to Imo state but I refused because I didn’t want to be compromised.
”I refused the private jet and even the tempting offer made to me, very tempting, we are talking about two million dollars here, which I refused.
”Although, I tried to persuade them that I was going to do what is needful, free and fair primaries. Every stakeholder must be involved.
”Immediately we landed at the airport, that was where the problem started. They wanted to kidnap every member and only God knows where they wanted to take us to, which I refused.
”And to say the least, I pity the Imo people but they have to take their destiny in their own hands and elect who they feel will represent them well. I am not from Imo state but I am a Nigerian.
”There is equality and there is equity. Some of our governors, I am sorry to say this, they take state resources as their personal resources and we know that power is transient.
After four or eight years you are out of power and the system will get you.
”But having said that, I am happy that the party has vindicated me and I know it is the best decision for the people of Imo state.”

He said the National Minimum Wage Negotiating committee has concluded its assignment and agreement has been reached and also documents have been signed.
“The report will be submitted to Mr President by today and therefore, having reached this position, the Organised Labour also decided that the proposed strike is hereby suspended
” Therefore, we thought this should be communicated appropriately without also divulging this information as mutual agreement has been reached,” he said.
Ms People, Chairman of the Tripartite Committee also noted that the assignment of the committee has been concluded.
“We are going to present our report to Mr President today at 4:15 ,pm and he will reveal the figure that we have recommended, ” she said.
Mr Boss , Secretary of the Government of the Federation commended members of the committee for their time and commitment on the processes of recommending the new minimum wage.
I am confident that government will give expeditious consideration of the report when submitted tomorrow to Mr President. And very soon the processes will be put in place to truly actualise your recommendations so that the status of our working populace will be enhanced and they would receive appropriate and commensurate payments for the services they offer to our nation and to the different sectors of our economy, ” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the organised Labour had threatened to commence nationwide strike on Nov. 6 over government rejection of a N30,000 minimum wage. Government offered N24,000, which labour also rejected.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has commenced an indefinite nationwide strike.
According to the union, the strike is to protest the poor funding of Nigerian universities.
Led by its National President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU declared the strike at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State.
All academic staff of universities were directed to withdraw their services immediately.
ASUU specifically cited, “Failure on the side of the government to honour the memorandum of action signed between the union and the federal government in 2017” and “Renegotiation with ASUU which the government intentionally ignored with impunity” as its reasons for embarking on the strike.
