Opposition parties in Nigeria have come together to form a political coalition aimed at preventing President Muhammadu Bahari from winning a second consecutive term in next year's elections.
Thirty-nine registered political forces, including the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) and a splinter group from within the ruling party, signed an agreement late on Monday to form the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).
Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP spokesperson, described the parties' teaming up as a bold statement to demonstrate the "feelings of Nigerians" about Buhari's government.
"More parties will still join the coalition and we will bring up a candidate whose capacity will trounce Buhari's incompetence in governance," Ologbondiyan told Al Jazeera on Tuesday.
We are a nation of 185 million people. No alliance can be 'so many'. Nigerians have already reached a consensus to source for a new president on the platform of the rebranded and repositioned PDP," he added.
But the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) dismissed the move, saying the efforts to unseat Buhari would fail.
APC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi insisted the party remains united.
"We once again reiterate the commitment of our party to address real grievances of our genuine members. We call on them to take advantage of this opportunity while the windows for reconciliation are still open," Abdullahi said in a statement.
"We are confident that no level of gang-up can make our government under President Buhari to waver in its promises to Nigerians to rid our country of corruption and improve the quality of lives for our people," he said.

Internal rift

The formation of the new coalition comes as Nigeria witnesses one of its biggest political re-alignments in recent years.
This has not spared Buhari's APC, as a major block within the ruling party broke away days ago to join forces with the opposition.
The splinter group of disaffected APC members led by Buhari's former ally, Buba Galadima, criticised the president's three years in power as "a monumental disaster".
"After more than three years of governance, our hopes have been betrayed, our expectations completely dashed. The APC has run a rudderless, inept and incompetent government that has failed to deliver good governance to the Nigerian people," Galadima said in a statement.

Opposition

In 2015, Buhari secured 53.9 percent of the votes to become the first opposition candidate in Nigeria to defeat an incumbent at the ballot box. His victory over former President Goodluck Jonathan prompted spontaneous celebrations among supporters across the country.
The president has huge grassroots support. He is also known as one of the few leaders in the country's history who has been tough on corruption.
In April, 75-year-old Buhari announced his plan to seek a second four-year term, despite concerns about his age and health - last year, the president where he received treatment for an "undisclosed "health challenge".
But Buhari's intention to run again did not go down well with some of his political allies, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo who joined the opposition alliance against his candidacy.
The CUPP is expected over the next few months to present a common candidate to run against Buhari. Atiku Abubakar, 71, a former vice president and erstwhile Buhari ally, is the most prominent figure so far to have announced his intention to run in 2019 under an opposition platform.
But some political analysts said it's too early to assess the CUPP's chances, raising concerns about the objectives of those opposing Buhari.
"Do the persons involved in this process represent the best our country can offer? I have my doubts because we have seen same persons manage our affairs since 1999 and their ideas remain the same," saidAchilleus-Chud Uchegbu, a journalist and political commentator.
"They lack ideologies that would build societies. Their ideas are ego-driven," added Uchegbu.

'Not too young to run'

Buhari is the oldest person to lead Nigeria since the transition to civilian government in 1999.
In May, he signed a new bill into lawthat reduced the minimum age for political offices to encourage youth to run for public office. For the presidency, the minimum age was brought down to 35 from 40.
Still, youth activists believe the system is still skewed towards political veterans.
"Same old politicians are aligning and forming coalitions to clinch or retain power in 2019; where does this leave the youth?" Chioma Agwuegbo told Al Jazeera.
"It leaves youths in the political parties making coalitions and making their voices heard like the other members of their party," she said.
Boko Haram has been largely reduced to suicide bombings and intermittent attacks [File: The Associated Press]

Ahead of his election in 2015, Buhari promised to tackle Boko Haram - an armed group that has carried out a deadly armed campaign for over a decade - as well as fight corruption, revive the economy and provide jobs.
Some of the areas occupied by boko haram have been recovered and the group has been largely reduced to suicide bombings and intermittent attacks.
Corruption remains a big problem in Nigeria, perceived by many as the root of the country’s poverty.
Attacks in the oil-rich Niger Delta and resurgence of separatist sentiments, which flared up during early days of Buhari's tenure, have calmed.
There are concerns, however, over clashes between nomadic herders and farmers which have claimed the lives of hundreds and displaced thousands, as well as question marks about whether Buhari is fit to run again given his heath.
Nigeria is scheduled to hold elections on February 16, 2019.

Saudi interior minister slams ‘false accusations’ on Khashoggi’s disappearance

  • News reports about orders to kill Khashoggi "are lies and baseless allegations", the minister says
  • Turkey said on Thursday it had accepted a proposal from Saudi Arabia to cooperate on the investigation
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's minister of interior, Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, on Saturday denounced the "false accusations" being circulated in some media outlets linking the Saudi government and people to the disappearance of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
News reports about orders to kill Khashoggi "are lies and baseless allegations", the minister said in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
He said the government of Saudi Arabia is "committed to its principles, rules and traditions and is in compliance with international laws and conventions."
Prince Abdulaziz noted that Saudi Arabia and Turkey have agree to conduct a joint investigation and it is important for the media to report only the facts and "not to affect the paths of investigation and judicial proceedings."
"He also stressed the Kingdom's keenness on the interest of its citizens at home and abroad and its keenness in particular to clarify the whole truth about the disappearance of the citizen Jamal Khashoggi," the SPA report said.
Khashoggi, a Saudi national and journalist who had been based in the US, has been missing since Oct. 2, when he visited the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul to secure divorce papers.
Turkey said on Thursday it had accepted a proposal from Saudi Arabia to cooperate on the investigation.
A security delegation consisting of Saudi investigators arrived in Istanbul on Saturday to participate in the investigations.

The Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports (COMPPS) today announced that David Gallop AM, the CEO of Football Federation Australia, will become the new Chairperson of COMPPS, effective immediately, with James Sutherland stepping down as the current Chairperson following his resignation as CEO of Cricket Australia.
James Sutherland has held the position of Chairperson since COMPPS was formed in 2009, and has been CEO of Cricket Australia since 2001. He will officially vacate his role as CEO of Cricket Australia at their Annual General Meeting later this month.
Gallop is recognised as one of the leading sports administrators in Australia having been the CEO of Football Federation Australia since 2012 and was previously the CEO of the National Rugby League (NRL) from 2002 to 2012. David has also served as served as Deputy Chairman of the Australian Sports Commission, Secretary of the Rugby League International Federation and a member of the Asian Football Confederation Competitions Committee. In 2016 David was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division for significant services to sports administration through executive roles with football and rugby league organisations and to the community.
COMPPS Executive Director, Malcom Speed, paid tribute to James and his contribution to Australian Sport over the past 25 years and more recently as the Chairperson of COMPPS, and congratulated David on his new appointment.
“James has provided strong and sound leadership for the Chief Executives of the other sports that operate under the COMPPS banner. He is highly respected by the other Chief Executives and they have responded well to his leadership,” said Speed.
“David will be an excellent replacement for James with a wide experience across two major professional sports and his time as deputy chair of Sport Australia (Australian Sports Commission) provides him a great insight into the role government plays as a major stakeholder in sport,” concluded Speed.
James Sutherland congratulated Mr Gallop on his appointment to the role.
“COMPPS has been critical in ensuring sports work together to innovate and advocate across Australia for the best outcome for athletes, participants and the industry as a whole.
“COMPPS will continue to play a vital role in connecting the major participation sporting bodies as we strive to keep more Australian’s active.
“I congratulate David on his appointment as Chairperson and thank all members for their support during my tenure,” concluded Sutherland.
David Gallop also recognised James Sutherland’s legacy as chairperson of COMPPS and is looking forward to continuing to improve the status and voice of Sport in Australia.
” It has been a pleasure to work under the chairmanship of James – he has provided important leadership among the COMPPS members during his time on numerous matters affecting the industry.
“When the sports come together under COMPPS they are a powerful voice that represents millions of Australians in advocating for positions that enhance and protect the importance place that sport plays in the community.
“I look forward to continuing his good work for the betterment of professional and participation sports”, concluded Gallop.

Government releases funding to help more athletes qualify for Olympics

‘Aspiration fund’ totalling £3m for Tokyo 2020 and beyond
Paralympic sports such as wheelchair rugby also eligible

Olympic sports such as badminton, basketball and surfing, which do not receive elite funding by UKSport, will be able to apply for up to £500,000 of financial help from a new “aspiration fund” set up by the government.
Paralympic sports, such as wheelchair rugby and goal ball, will also be eligible for the scheme, which is designed to help athletes from more sports to qualify for Tokyo 2020 and beyond.
Tracey Crouch, the minister for sport and civil society, said the fund, which amounts to £3m in total, would enable more athletes the chance to inspire the nation.
“UK Sport investment has transformed Britain into an Olympic and Paralympic powerhouse,” she said. “But there are sports, not on UK Sport’s world-class programme, that do a huge amount of good in communities that we can help on their path to the podium.”
Liz Nicholl, the chief executive of UK Sport, called it a “fantastic opportunity” for more sports to get on track for the Tokyo Games.
She said: “Many of the sports we are unable to support, while further away from reaching the podium, have great potential not only to inspire through their performances but also to have a social impact in communities across the UK.”
Table-tennis, skateboarding, handball and baseball/softball are also expected to apply for the scheme. To receive funding, which will run until the end of the Tokyo 2020 cycle, sports will have to convince the government they will engage and inspire communities.
The announcement was given a cautious welcome by David Pond, the chief executive of GB wheelchair rugby, which lost all of its UK Sport funding after finishing fifth at Rio 2016. “Any additional funding will obviously help us,” he said, “but the reality is next year I need to raise £400,000 to help us prepare us properly for the 2020 Paralympics.”
